Hi all,
I just wanted to clear something. Signing a document ( i.e. file ) is
NOT an identification ! Showing your ID card to someone is
identification, also entering password to your account ( with or without
the use of Kerberos ). Therefore all the picture issue is out of context
here.
Signing a document just says that you are legally connected to the
document. Of course, every signature that is a template to future
signatures, and that may be compared with future signatures, must be
backed by identification. For example, when you first open your bank
account, you had to show your ID card. You then signed a template
signature. Every check you sign may be compared to this template
signature. The keysigning party is just giving your template signature.
Regarding the usage of signed mail. What's the purpose ? What is my
motivation to sign my mail ? Do I need someone to sue me just because he
was offended of me using informal "Hi" instead of formal "Hello" ?
The keysigning party is important for future use. If my bank ask me to
digitally sign a document, I can use my signature signed by "<well known
third party>" to sign this document. It is up to the bank to accept or
reject this signature. This imply that only when the law community (
lawyers, courts etc. ) widely accepts digital signature, these
signatures will be practically used.

Oren Honen.
