I have a few ideas:

The simplest solution, IMHO, is to install sndconfig (a util on the first CD). 
I was always able to fix sound card problems with that utility.

I have noticed that GNU/Linux distros can't keep up with Intel's ICH arch. Try 
researching the Intel site.

After a bit of Google, I found out it is probably a Kernel issue. Try 
upgrading/updating your Kernel.
