The adsl-script doesn't ask for the IP address of the modem, but only the interface. So I must miss something important.

So, I intend to use it in the regular PPPoE mode. Tried to configure it to run out-of-the-box, with the adsl-setup script that is bundled with rp-pppoe. It is not working, so I have to start digging. :) I wondered, maybe someone can tell me the main steps of the configuration.
