I would try sysrq first. Might have prevented the need to violently use the power switch and perhaps even to get some leads as to where the problem is. You might want to look at kernel-source/Documentation/sysrq.txt. In addition, my experience is that these sort of problems requires a lot of patient (is this the right spelling for willingness to wait more?): take a walk for a hour or two. The machine might respond to previous entries during that time. Or it might writes some useful information in the logs.
