In conclusion:
SquirrelMail:
Installation on debian (sid) - apt-get install squirrelmail, and then run "squirrelmail-configure" - full marks.
Hebrew support - you have to enable the Hebrew interface as well, which is not translated. You get English interface in a RTL context, and things are most annoying - barely passes (much better than IMP, mind you).
Protocol support - supports IMAP and POP3, but no SSL-IMAP. I am testing it by tunneling the connection through an SSH tunnel at the moment. Probably ok for running on the same server the mail is stored on - passes for personal use, not for production mass-serving (though ssltunnel can probably work around this problem).
On the whole, I'd go with squirrelmail over imp.
