Is your java installation OK? What do you get when you run:
$JAVA_HOME/bin/java -version
If you've installed the JDK, can you run any of the demos provided with it?
$JAVA_HOME/bin/java -jar $JAVA_HOME/demo/jfc/SwingSet2/SwingSet2.jar
Maybe you'll get some better errors here...

2 more bits of info.
1 - I tried Mozilla with JAVA on GNOME and got the same crash - so I guess X is crashing (not KDE as I had thought).
2 - I tried different users - existing users, a new user I set up just to test Mozilla and root. The same crash happens in all cases. So this is a system problem and not confined to the user.
