To prove this latest point, and for general amusement, consider

"Reply-To Considered Harmful",

http://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html

and

"Reply-To Considered Useful",

http://www.metasystema.net/essays/reply-to.mhtml

together.

The above URLs are linked to from, among other places, the
documentation of mailman, a popular mailing list administration
software package. Of course, there are also

"Mailman Considered Harmful",

http://www.jwz.org/doc/mailman.html

and

"Mailman Considered Beneficial"

http://www.list.org/jwzrebuttal.html

ad infinitum.

My personal opinion is that there are three types of mailing lists:

1) Discussion lists where replies should go to the list by default.

2) Announcement lists where replies should go to the sender by
   default.

3) "Patch" or "checkin" lists where replies should go to a different
list by default (the patch list is essentially an announcement, but
replies go to an associated discussion list).

Linux-IL is obviously a discussion list, but I am quite happy letting
my MUA mangle Reply-To to my heart's content.

Also note that many modern MUAs comply with RFC 2369, which aids greatly.

Now, can we agree on the number of differential SCSI cable lashes the
next poster who raises the issue gets? ;-)

Oops!!! ;-)
