I know for sure that it is possible, although I never done that. There is a way to run VNC as inetd service. Just google for it (e.g. http://faq.gotomyvnc.com/cgi-bin/fom?_recurse=1&file=65 ). I'm not sure it is `lighter' than X, I thing it needs more resources (It is both the X client AND server). It really depends on the window manager you use (I use `twm', which is really light, with VNC). The only difference is, it does not use the display hardware. the VNC X emulation is based on Xfree so it almost the same as the real X.
