What do you mean by "light"? On the server side? On the client side? Is
memory an issue with any of those or performance?

VNC's X server is quite inferior to XFree/Xorg. Have you looked at 
TinyX and friends?

All the xDMs run their own X servers . However you could use a simple X
client to select the desktop environment, if that is what you want.
