The default package is optimized enough. The whole gentoo gcc optimization can 
boost your performance with a 1-2% rate, which is not worth the 12+ hours 
wait untill you compile everything (I have the same CPU and mount of memory 
at home). I am a gentoo use myself, but I still use firefox` binary build.

Muli, on the other hand, gave you a good suggestion. Try prelinking the 
libraries. That speeds up loads dramatically.
