Ah! Got it.

While helpful suggestions were pouring, I did some more testing and
found that the problem is user-specific [1]. Then, I followed your
suggestion and suggestion I oprofiled an invocation; it turns out that
half the time was spent in in libfreetype and libfontconfig. So I
renamed away my ~/.fonts*, and voila! Problem solved. I'm beginning to
really like this oprofile thingy; pitty it's not in the default RedHat
kernels.

It turns out that something in those automagical ~/.font* files got
automagically corrupted. I couldn't find anything obviously wrong other
than having an impolite variety of them, but copies are available if
someone would like to have a look.

[1] Apparently I found a 7-second Mozilla start time so plausible that I
didn't bother to test that point in advance. There's surely a lesson in
this, though I'm not sure for whom.
