Ah! Got it. While helpful suggestions were pouring, I did some more testing and found that the problem is user-specific [1]. Then, I followed your suggestion and suggestion I oprofiled an invocation; it turns out that half the time was spent in in libfreetype and libfontconfig. So I renamed away my ~/.fonts*, and voila! Problem solved. I'm beginning to really like this oprofile thingy; pitty it's not in the default RedHat kernels. It turns out that something in those automagical ~/.font* files got automagically corrupted. I couldn't find anything obviously wrong other than having an impolite variety of them, but copies are available if someone would like to have a look. Eran [1] Apparently I found a 7-second Mozilla start time so plausible that I didn't bother to test that point in advance. There's surely a lesson in this, though I'm not sure for whom. ================================================================= To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
