Maybe they ment "it costs 500 after a 1000 NIS discount"? (i.e.
the original price is 1500 and you pay "only" 500).

No. A friend of mine had that too. After a second of thought, it is likely to be the same friend. HOWEVER, as I was in the store with him when he paid, I can attest.
The store is BUG. The computer is a Pentium 4 3GHz. If you take the basic computer system, and add to it a 493NIS Windows XP Home, the store will give you a 1000 sheqels discount, resulting in an overall reduction of price by about 500 sheqels.

So far we managed to take the computer home, remove XP, put Windows 2000 on it, and find out that the on board ethernet controller is unsupported. We also took the computer back for them to do something about the awful noise the fans are making. It was a downright environmental hazard. I doubt it's related to this discussion, however.

Get me another 10 of these if you are right :)

I'm afraid they only come when you buy a whole computer. It's likely to be a store (or chain) thing, rather than a MS thing.

Mia culpa - I forgot to ask them not to activate the copy. Maybe some insane friend would like to install Windows XP Home.
