Both the 1st and the 3rd methods sound like something that ships with Adobe Acrobat Reader by default. I suggest you check Acrobat Reader's list of plugins (in the Help | About page or somewhere else -- I don't have Acrobat Reader for Windows here) to see what methods are supported by default. This page suggests talks about self-signed certs and more:

Hey, it's best to simply try! As you can see on their page, there is plenty of test code. Get out your trusty Eclipse and try it.
