Both arguments make sense. In that case, here is my little contribution to the list of success stories: I did a quick check, and my PCMCIA 802.11g cards are prism chipset based (the installation was indeed 'plug-n-play') while the USB wifi cards use ndiswrapper (I haven't noticed any problems, and they weren't too difficult to install if you can follow a short step by step doc).
