I understand (from having a quick look at the source) that they are using myspell, based on the openoffice myspell component.

The relevant part of the source tree available at:
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/bonecho/alpha3/source/firefox-2.0a3-source.tar.bz2

is in the mozilla/extensions/spellcheck directory.
