I would have expected a better understanding from you, of all people, Ira - without IP laws the GPL, BSD, Perl's artistic license and all the other great copyright/copyleft licenses would be meaningless as well.
It has already been established that all licenses are worthless if operated by people who cannot afford to defend them in court. The legal system has lost any kind of trust by playing along with IP and copyright lawsuits which repeatedly showed this to be true. The current Kafkaesque SCO/etc lawsuit is another nail in that coffin (of the current legal system in the IP/Copyright/Patent domains). Any lawsuit that lasts long enough that participating legal persons can rely on seeing their kids through college on the income from it alone speaks volumes about what 'law' really is and who it serves. The lady with the scales is really blind, you know, because they made her that way. It's the weight in the scales that matters. Gold is pretty dense, thus heavy.
