I did some work on hebrew for 770, current status description follows.
Fonts:
The easiest way is to simply add ttf fonts with hebrew to
/home/user/.fonts. I added both ms fonts and culmus.
This helps in application that let you select fonts, but not in ones
that use the default fonts.
The included nokia fonts do not include hebrew glyph, which is a problem
with lots of applications. I used fontforge to copy glyphs from other
fonts to nokia fonts, and this allows using hebrew in all applications.
The problem is that those fonts are not redistributable. A
better solution is to take the URW fonts, and edit them to have the
nokia fonts names (so that they work with all themes, etc.). Maybe it's
possible to uses aliasing in fontconfig, but I don't know that.
Hebrew browsing:
* included Opera has no RTL support. With hacked fonts it displays
hebrew pages, but reversed.
* minimo works OK, does not need hacked fonts, but it only works on
UTF-8 encoded pages. ISO-8859-8/windows-1255 pages are displayed with
latin letters for some reason. I hacked privoxy (running on the 770)
so that it can translate pages from 8859-8 to UTF-8.
* a hacked (by me) version of links-2.1 supports hebrew, but it is far
from perfect.
Input:
* I added a hebrew keyboard. It works in xterm and most applications,
but not in minimo, for some reason. In my testing, other 2 byte
characters were not accepted by minimo as well.
