FYI,

i had a disk with bad sectors, and tried to use a live cd to boot from to
save the good sectors via ssh ...
however, both ubuntu and the latest fedora, insisted on trying to mount, or
at least access my disk (which took forever because of the bad sectors)
unless i added the boot options 'ide=none' (or somthing like that) which was
no help as i couldn't access the disk myself after it booted.

fedora 4 (or was it 5) , was ok though.
