If you ISP supports it (Barak does) you can use DHCP instead of
L2TP/PPTP.
In this case, you router no longer needs to do anything (beyond NAT)

In my experience - far more reliable. (But it may depend on the state of
your local HOT infrastructure)
My IP was last changed ~4 months ago.
