To tell the truth, as someone who is following the linux hardware
support, I can tell you that I didn't see lately any cam from the
major player (Microsoft, Logitech, Creative, Philips) that is not
supported. Some are supported only partially and some (specially
Logitech) are fully supported.

Even the cheapest ones (the ones which you can buy at the supermarket
for 30-60 NIS) are supported by Linux.

Funny thing happend to me few months ago: I bought a really cheap
webcam from the supermarket (it costs me about 30 NIS) for some
testings (just some motion detection, quality was not a factor). With
Windows XP the machine was crashing entirely (MS knows that but
there's no replacement driver) but with Linux (Fedora 8) it worked
excellent.
