You could install the Keyboard Modifier Keys panel applet, that will help you determine if the computer _thinks_ that a modifier key (such as Shift) is activated. My KDE 4 machine is inactive at the moment, but in System Settings it should not be difficult to find Sticky Keys under Accessibility or Keyboard.
