As I already wrote, I don't want to get into an arguement about what is or isn't LINUX, and I think the examples Meir gave illustrate why. In any case, since I used jpilot, kwrite and OpenOffice (all Linux programs) to transfer the files from Palm to Android, I think I'm OK.
BUT - that being said, I'm beginning to think that this is an Android problem and I will look for a more appropriate forum. In case anyone is interested, the reason I've come to that conclusion is that the files also look OK when I go directly to the Dropbox site. While on the topic of Dropbox, I was pleasantly surprised to see that Hebrew characters in the files I created in Linux are also fine. I was even more surprised that the built-in file browser on the Dropbox site also handles Hebrew Open Office (.odt) files.
