This in an answer I owe you for some time. I am able to give a meaningful one
only now.
1-On thursday I tried to install debian on a partition on my wife's computer,
using the disk received from Lior. Nada! Not only the computer did not boot
from it, after preparing floppies and starting installation, the system
complained of errors and the process stopped. I started slackware and tried to
copy the CD to the it but it did not work either. I SLOWED DOWN THE CDROM
DRIVE DRASTICALLY WITH HDPARM -DID NOT HELP.
In the end I mounted the cd on my computer (there it works allright) and
installed using the ethernet to ethernet connection between the two.
I had no such problem when installing Slackware using a CDROM bought 6-12
months earlier. My guess is that the performance of Lior's burner deteriorates
gradually with time and unless your own drive is in top condition, you are in
trouble (just for the record, my wife's computer is some three months old,
while the CDROM drive on mine is much older.
2-Dirk Ettenbuettel has announced on the octave mailing list (maybe on the
Debian list as well) a new version of knoppix (called quantium or something
like that) geared to technical-scientific work (he mainly replaced the open
office with statistical and mathematical packages and with tex, latex &
texmacs). That arouse my curiosity: I downloaded the iso image and burned it.
I don't think I am going to use it. It's impressive but compared to the real
thing... . The point is that the disk I burned, works allright with both our
computers.
So, if you are still interested in Knoppix, I can download it, burn it and
send it to you... I don't know, though, wherefrom to download the localized
(hebrew) version.
Cheers, Avraham
