Hi All,
Something I came across:
1. YAST2 of SuSE 6.3 gives the options of putting LILO on /boot (if it is a
separate partition) or on the MBR. If you select /boot, it does NOT
automatically set the bootable flag of the partition.
I found this out the hard way. I also found myself up the creek with out a
paddle when I realized I didn't have a boot floppy. Fortunately, I got out
of that mess. Which brings me to Tip #2.
2. If you boot off the SuSE 6.3 CD, it will automatically load YAST2.
CTRL-ALT-F2 will get you a root prompt and a ramdisk file system. I haven't
had time to explore it but it seemed fairly complete vis-a-vis sys utils. I
ran fdisk from it to set the bootable flag of /boot. I believe this is
possible with RH too. CTRL-ALT-F6 I think.
In a pinch I guess you can use it as a rescue disk. Of course, I don't want
to think of the security implications of that. But I guess physical access
to the system is the ultimate security lapse.
Hope this is useful to somebody. I also hope this is news to somebody. :)
Biju
