Hi
I hope you have installed linux system. So type 'man rpm' at shell prompt
and you will get enough information.
Otheerwise, in short rpm stands for RedHat Package Manager. These are
installable programs. A .rpm files contains files list in a perticular
application, their destination location, actions performed prior to and
after
installation and of course compressed application programs.
rpm is also a program that is an interface to handle *.rpm files. It can
install/uninstall files, query for packages installed on specific
criteria, search etc. It stores installed package information in a central
database that can be used by tools like kpackage and gnorpm(Of course rpm
program uses itself too).
.rpm file format is brought by RadHat and supported by many other linux
distributions. There are couple of other package format also like .deb
under debian.
Hope you find this useful.
Bye
Shridhar
P.S. The best feature of rpm is you can definitely and completely remove a
package. Unlike windows there are no 'files shared by some other programs
and unused dll cluttering registry.'
