There could be a problem in running fetchmail through ip-up. According to
one of the files in the fetchmail source distribution (the file "ip-up" in
the contrib directory), pppd masks out several signals during the run of
the ip-up script. This reportedly causes fetchmail to lose timeout signals
and thus appear to hang in case of connection failures.
Don't know if the problem has been fixed in newer versions of fetchmail
(and/or pppd). The reference quoted above is dated 1997 (but is still a part
of the 5.2.4 distribution)
