If you intend to do a lot of typing (whether just plain typing in
commands, or actual coding, or whatever), consider that after a
year or so you may start seeing symptoms like wrist pain etc.
There is no substitute for a full size keyboard for long periods
of hard work.

Having said that, my laptop has some advantages. The mouse is a
trackpad, which works great; I love the ability to click or drag
with my forefinger. (I positively hate the other kind of laptop
mouse - the little button sitting among the keys in the middle
row. This is a personal choice - be sure you try both out and
decide which you like!)

I have managed to get power management working perfectly on my
laptop, so now it can stay up as long as I don't need to use the
fake O/S on hda1 for some fake work (don't ask :-) Current
record: 37 days without a reboot!

Also be sure you check out every piece of the laptop - sound card,
video card, PCMCIA cards, etc before buying one. Check out the
linux laptop pages (search on Yahoo for "linux laptop" will get
you there) and other resources for compatibility before buying,
although this is getting to be less and less of a problem these
days, thankfully.

Video is the least of your worries - unless you intend to play
fast animations etc., the VESA frame buffer trick will get it
going on any recent (less than 2 years old) laptop or desktop.
(See http://www.dim.com/~sitaram/linux-live-cd for an interesting
application of this).

HTH.
