Hi Nick,
I think u are little bit confused about the monolithic 
kernel arch. It is certain that Linux has graduated from 
the plain vanilla monolithic kernel arch but still the 
core kernel is monolithic (see Bach for the def). Regarding the
adoptation of
Linux in the embaded system, u are also little confused as
even Allan Cox said (ref BangLinux netCast), the Linux kernel
is not ready for the realtime embaded system as the threading 
and realtime interrupt handling is still poor.
