Quantum Fireball? Do you see this messages at the startup - "UDMA
capable but not enabled?"

I would have done the following.. irrespective of the line above.

0. Check BIOS settings.. if the DMA 1 [to Ultra/66] is enabled. Note
down the status. If it is ON then..
1. If it is, check if the HDD is capable of that. May be your HDD number
could help you find some details about your HDD from Quantum's
website about what is the rated mode of operation of HDD.
2. Check if there is an option in your BIOS to the same sense, if it is
enabled. A lower than
rated mode usually works. The trouble starts when you are trying to
run an HDD faster than you can.. or telling others to access it
using a higher than rated mode.
3. Now boot O/S. Are you also running Windows on the same machine,
without problems?
4. hdparm -tT /dev/hdX [X=your partition] and note the output. [root]
5. hdparm [root] and note the settings echoed. [root] Check if the UDMA
modes are on? man hdparm. [values corresponding to -cN and -dM
flag, N and M]
6. Assign lower values to this set and try to work on this setting. Also
note down the output of
hdparm -tT /dev/hdX once again. You will get either comparable or
lower values.. if you are
effectively stepping down the HDD from it's higher rate mode.

All the best. Do report your results, if it solves your problem.
