The key here is the 'insmod driver'.

>   ls -l /dev/cdrom gives

Are you sure that your kernel has cdrom support enabled?  Run 'dmesg' right
after boot up and see if messages about the cdrom being detected are
printed.

Also, is your cdrom connected as the master on your second IDE interface? 
/dev/hdc  refers to the master device on the second ide interface.

Also look at /proc/sys/dev/cdrom
