While starting PINE, it is possible to specify the absolute path of the
startup folder with a -f switch.

pine -f foldername

Try if this works. It may crib and look for your inbox [] or mail[\] or
some other directory. Try fiddling with the .pinerc and see if you can
specify that directory as your default MAIL directory. 

And POST THE RESULTS so that we can tell the next guy to look at your
mail.
