this is really weird , if by command prompt, u don't mean the login:
prompt.  command prompt
means the shell is now running, but that can happen only after running
login( ); so one should get
a login prompt when the machine boots, b'cose init --> getty --> login
should happen in sequence
( when shell starts only then it forks to the commands issued , right ,
wrong ?)

and think of shell to run  for every user  in /etc/passwd , so how come a
shell is running without
getting any username ? hope it's not like , 'my machine hangs during
bootup displaying a message
login :  ;o)
