More seriously... this is a problem with /etc/inittab again
[second today, it seems]

Do this.

1. What does the prompt look like? $ or #.
2. If # then do this
        # vi /etc/inittab
3. Find the line containing initdefault
4. You may find 1 there [Red Hat] or S [SuSE Linux] depending on distro.
Seems the
default runlevel here is single user mode which is actually for
maintenance. [Binand, look at your /etc/inittab and tell if S is correct
        entry for single user mode]
5. Change that to 3 [RHL] or 2 [SuSE].

So much for him. Public on the list, what else could go wrong? Mera
dimaag to yahin tak chalta hain :-D

If it is not this, then there may be a problem with LILO. Someone could
have hacked the machine and put "linux single" in /etc/lilo.conf and run
/sbin/lilo -v after that. You will have to modify that file, remove the
word [single] from wherever it is found and remove that. And then again
do /sbin/lilo -v as root.
HTH
Rohit

PS - I seem to be doing a lot of dirty work around here.

And I request all of you once again, most seriously, when a problem
is solved, you will please PLEASE post the working solution [elaborate]
and problem [brief] for everyone's benefit.
