A colleague of mine got a Compaq (sorry, forgot the details) and tried
it with a Xircom REM 56G/100 dual card, and it hung both in Windows and Linux.
Laptops that I know work without problems include HP Omnibook and IBM
Thinkpad, not to mention my ACI. :-)
