[LIH] Unable to Activate Local-loopback network interface

I've been unable to ping or telnet to 127.0.0.1 on my standalone machine.
i think this is becuse the local loopback device is shown as inactive when i
run netcfg. Is there a way in which i can activate this interface at boot
time. Thnx in advance .
