Make sure the drive reads CD-R and CD-RW written at 4x or greater at
the same speed as it reads the aluminum ones. My personal choice are
drives sold by Asus. Rather than use the Creative DXR?, use the G400
for MPEG2 decoding and use an external Yamaha Dolby Digital/DTS
decoder powered by JBL Pro speakers or even better, B&W. ;-)

Does Creative still ship AWE64?

It is ISA based and works great under both ALSA and OSS/Free. One
problem i have with my AWE64 is the onboard IDE controller which
occupies a precious IRQ under windows and i can't find a way to
disable it.

My personal choice is the PCI64/128? which i think is the PCI version
of the AWE64.

Hmm, if u plan to watch DVD movies, don't go in for the multimedia
speakers, Cambridge Soundworks 5 speaker kit is OK.

Sorry, no hands on experience with LG monitors.

Rtl8139 or the Dlink 538tx (?)

Display? As Nikhil suggested, It's either a Voodoo3 or a G400 as
nothing else would could impress an ex-SGI'an. ;-)
