You should wait all the way till it has either powered the machine off
or says, it's safe to switch the machine off now (can't remember the
exact message). If the fs is not unmounted at that point, bad things
can happen.

1. Make sure that you have an entry for your hard disk in the BIOS boot
options.
But it looks like your disk is bad. Try replacing the cables or try
using it on another machine to see if it works. If you still get I/O
errors, you're better off getting another disk. As for valuable data,
there is nothing like backing it up periodically :)
