may be i am not right, but a hardisk i/o may be a real media problem
and it seems your hdd is lost its life, you can try mounting the hdd on
another machine with linux or, get a single floppy distro, boot up
and mount the drive, use fsck, if that too fails then a last trial is
to use dd to write 0 to all the address of the harddisk and
repartition it and reinstall all software (really sorry for you if that is
the case)
