First of all 139 port is used by SMB servers. SMB is a protocol used in
microsoft networks to communicate with other machines. Linux also
supports this protocol with a program called Samba. Samba also
provides the same set of services as Windoze boxes. So its not an
insecurityi, but a service. Your friend was able browse your directories
because you are sharing your directories with others. For more info
consult /usr/doc/Samba-ver../doc folder which contains extensive
documentation about SMB and Samba.

LIH is all for free speech. But it was created for a purpose - to help
people discuss issues about installing and running Linux. If your
messages are counterproductive to this purpose, your privileges to
submit messages can and will be revoked.
