You definitely do not need a regisred domain for an intranet, but if
someone is going to reply outside the intranet, you will need a domain

Domain registration is same, whether you want to use it for mail or
otherwise..You will have to register at Internic, pay the fees and
are done. The procedure usually takes a few weeks(from India). Of
course, there might be some franchisees here in India to do the dirty
work for you:)
