Um, Sorry if I couldn't make it clearer earlier. BTW I did manage to hunt
the bug down.:-)
I have a habit of adding/upgrading Perl modules by running the CPAN.pm
module which presents an easy module management system ( I know that you
know it - This is for the uninformed:-).
I have been doing this for a long time under RH 5.2,6,6.1, SuSE 6.2,6.3 .The
method for this is to run Perl -MCPAN -e shell and add /updrade modules I
need. However , I fell flat on my face with RH 6.2
The Problem is this: Whenever I tried to add _any_ module , I got an error
message with a call trace stack ending with an MD5 error which stumped me
for a while. Installs failed with lots of messages eg. 'error scanning
http, ftp , , md5 error in <modulename> warning - future reserved word
etc.'
The botttomline was- The method i had used all this while did not work
anymore . I was down to doing vanilla make, make test and make install.
Initially, vanilla Perl w/o modules calls lynx -source <url> to get the
list of mirrors etc.etc. and then , after getting/installing the libnet
module used ftp directly. The trouble- since the url does not include any
protocol header, lynx was gratiously adding 'guessing http://, guessing
ftp:// etc and suchlike rubbish to _everything_ brought using lynx -source ,
which however informative , is NOT legal perl code. Hence, nothing could be
installed using the defaults. A temporary workaround was to rename lynx to
lnx and force CPAN to use ncftpget . A second one was to add libnet by
downloading and doing the make , make test and make install cycle , watching
carefully for missing dependancies, which CAPN normally takes care of. Once
LWP or libnet was installed, everything was back to normal.
Do tell me if you have seen any error similar to this at your end and tell
me If this error is reproducible.
