Hi,
install the program wvdial (highly recommended) (should be on PCQ
CD or definitely on April CHIP CD) or get it from
http://www.worldvisions.ca/wvdial/ (use your friend's PC)
Then run
wvdial /etc/wvdial.conf
as root after switching on the modem and connecting it. Edit
/etc/wvdial.conf
remove the semi-colons and put your phone-number, username and password.
put 'Dial Command = ATDP' if you have pulse dialing
put 'Init3 = ATM0' if you have a pet parrot
now type 'wvdial' and connect to vsnl automagically.
In case you can connect but cannot access websites maybe there is a
problem with the nameserver. enter in your /etc/resolv.conf
search vsnl.net.in
nameserver 202.54.9.1 202.54.1.30
retry wvdial. you should be able to connect.
if you want a graphical tool use kppp which installs to the kde desktop.
Remember to use terminal based login or script based login (not PAP or
CHAP)
best wishes,
Indraneel

LIH is all for free speech. But it was created for a purpose - to help
people discuss issues about installing and running Linux. If your
