Although not a rule, isn't it too high an irq for eth0. Are you sure it is
not clashing?
+ 4. The light on the card [none of the two LEDs] glow. At all.
Hardware problem. As you said later in the same mail, is the other side
properly connected. In that case, at least one light should glow :)

Does it show "UP" in 'ifconfig -a'? I dont think it does.
+ The machine is running SuSE 6.3 and is connected using an ATP cable
+ to the router of hostel-1, IIT B. The connection was live some days
+ back on another machine and right now I am unable to check even if
+ the plug is pulled off the hub. Will check today.
May be the root of the problem.
