RAID == Redundant Array of {Inexpensive/Independent} Disks. RAID is a
technology which allows you to:

1. Bind multiple disks/partitions together and use them as one single
disk/partition (thus having partitions which are potentially larger
than any one single disk could be, and faster),

2. Store data redundantly on multiple disks so that if one disk gets
knocked out of the system the data is not lost (the other disks
continue working normally and the system is not affected).

3. (1) and (2) together.

For more information please read the Multi-Disk HOWTO.

Regards,
