I assume you are running the standard windoze telnet app?  It is 
horribly broken.  Go to Tucows / download.com and download TeraTerm Pro.

It is a _fantastic_ telnet client, and there is a SSH plugin as well.

I don't know the exact location but if you don't want to dig through 
Tucows, it is mirrored at http://www.hobbiton.org

You will not face _any_ problem with vi, pico, joe or whatever you want 
to use.  BTW - you _are_ sending this mail from pine, I see.  The editor 
in pine is pico.  You can call it separately to edit files, using pico 
<filename>

Or download nano (see my headers for the url) - lovely replacement for 
pico.
