To connect to internet via VSNL Dialup Connection do the following:

First of all, remove the line 'lock' from /etc/ppp/options file. Secondly 
type
this command on the shell prompt 'chmod 0600 ~/.kde/share/config/kppprc'. 
And
follow these steps.

1. open Kppp (K->Internet->Kppp)
2. Select SETUP button.
3. Select Accounts.
4. Select New


5. In the 'Dial' Tab set:

         (i) Connection Name: vsnl
        (ii) Phone Number   : 172222
        (iii)Authentication : PAP
        (iv) Let the 'Store password' checked.

6. Now select 'DNS' Tab and set:

        (i) Domain Name : vsnl.net.in

        (ii) Type two DNS IP addresses in the 'DNS IP Address:' Box:

                a) 202.54.30.1 (press enter or select Add)
                b) 202.54.1.30 (press enter or select Add)

        uncheck the 'Disable existing DNS Servers during Connection'.


7. In the 'IP' tab select 'Dynamic IP Address' if not selected; and leave 
the
   'Autoconfigure hostname from this IP' unchecked.

8. In the 'Gateway' tab let the 'Default Gateway' radio button selected and
   'Assign the Default Route to this Gateway' check-box checked.

9. In 'Login Script' Tab there is no entry required, 'Remove' any entries
   present there. We don't need this because we are using 'Password
   Authentication Protocol'.

10. And similarly don't change any thing in Accounting, let the 'Enable
    accounting' check-box unchecked; and 'Volume Accounting' to 'No 
Accounting'

11. Now select the 'Modem' tab:

12. Set the 'Modem Volume' as you may please.

13. Select 'Modem Commands', here only one setting needs to be changed,

14. Change the 'Initialization String' from 'ATZ' to 'ATX'.

15. Leave other settings as they are and press OK.

16. in 'Modem' tab press 'Query Modem'; If it correctly detects the modem 
and
displays the result then it is fine, else don't worry,

17. Select 'Device' tab and choose the '/dev/ttyS1' if your modem is 
connected
    to COM 2 port. (use Query Modem in Modem tab to know this setting 
works.)

18. 'Flow Control' Should be 'CRTSCTS' and 'Line Termination' should be 
'CR',
     set 'Connection Speed' to 115200.

19. Let the 'Use Lock File' checked and let 'Modem Timeout' to 60 seconds.

20. in 'PPP' tab set 'pppd Timeout' to 60 seconds.

21. Except 'Dock into Panel on Connect', select all check-boxes.

22. And there is no need to set anything in 'Graph' and 'About' Tab.

23. Now press 'OK'.

24. Enter your 'Login ID' and 'Password', then press 'Connect'.
