Thanks for the help from all of you at LI.
My modem responded when I added \n at the end.
SO I added this \n on the telephone number line of wvdial. and Voila it
worked
It handed over the connection to PPPD and to my amazement PPPD failed and
asked me to check /var/log/messages
when I checked the same it contained the follwing lines
(start )
<snip>
May 29 03:16:13 pumpum modprobe: can't locate module char-major-108
May 29 03:16:13 pumpum kernel: CSLIP: code copyright 1989 Regents of the
University of California
May 29 03:16:13 pumpum kernel: PPP: version 2.3.7 (demand dialling)
May 29 03:16:13 pumpum kernel: PPP line discipline registered.

May 29 03:16:23 pumpum pppd[671]: Connection terminated.
May 29 03:16:23 pumpum pppd[671]: Exit.
(End)
when again tried after changing the permissions of chap-secrets file to give
access to all ie user, group and others. and again ran the wvdial, PPPD
again Failed. and when I checked the /var/log/message file it showd the
following :
(start)
May 29 03:20:52 pumpum modprobe: can't locate module char-major-108
May 29 03:20:52 pumpum pppd[694]: pppd 2.3.10 started by root, uid 0
May 29 03:20:52 pumpum pppd[694]: Using interface ppp0
May 29 03:20:52 pumpum pppd[694]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS1
May 29 03:21:01 pumpum pppd[694]: Warning - secret file

May 29 03:21:01 pumpum pppd[694]: Connection terminated.
May 29 03:21:01 pumpum pppd[694]: Exit.
(end)
I thing it cannot find the module char-major-108, where do I find this
module and how to use this module.
Please help me to solve this problem
Thanks in Advance
