I know your query is already answered but few more from me.
1)Linux is not X i.e. GUI environment. GUI is *optional* in linux. Though
many people can't live without it. Sometimes I am such a person.. :-)
2)When you post the problem, please post all the relevant details. I know
you have done it but whta you have missed is(and the most important of
all things...) the video card. It's really essential to know video card
to configure X.
