I have a few additional fonts such as 'freefont','sharefont','URW' installed
since I need them when I work with The Gimp. Each of these font directories
are placed in their usual /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts directory. Each font
directory has a file named 'fonts.dir' that lists details about the fonts in
that particular directory. This file can be created using the 'mkfontdir'
command. Here are the problems I am facing...

1. 'mkfontdir' unable to recognise fonts in any of the font directories. It
lists 0 fonts in the fonts.dir that it creates.
2. I copied the proper 'fonts.dir' file thats originally came with the font
files in tar.gz format that I downloaded from gimp.org and put them in their
correct places. When I reboot my machine the next time, I see that the
fonts.dir in all the font directories have been modified like as if the
mkfontdir command is getting run during startup. Now because of problem
number 1, I end up with X unable to recognise my fonts when I start it
again, since fonts.dir in all font directories have been modified to list 0
fonts.

I use RHL 6.2(PCQ). Never had this problem when running RHL 6.1(PCQ).
