Configuring monitor is no big deal. Open /etc/X11/XF86Config, find
horizontal and vertical frequencies of your monitor from monitor manual
and fill them at proper places. You will come to know what to put where,
once you go thr. the file.
And X server is unlikely to crash if monitor is misconfigured. It may
simply blow away the monitor. If you say startx and smells that
somethingis gong wrong, say monitor going black or heavily flickering,
immediately kill X by pressing ctrl+alt+backspace. Otherwise
it may be too late to rescue your monitor.

But configuring i810 is altogether different problem. Dig recent posts
for reference..
